Our Activities

NIHIWATU® is an intimate island retreat where ancient tribal culture uniquely forms the backdrop to an experience of unregulated freedom, understated luxury and unforgettable memories.

We can tailor your stay and itinerary, orchestrating everything from world-class surfing and fishing, to visiting ancient Stone Age sites and traditional villages; going for a picnic under the breathtaking waterfalls or relaxing under the palm trees at Nihi Oka.

Let’s be honest, this is the main reason you are here with us in Sumba. Just take a look out from your window and you can understand why NIHIWATU® is so special. This side of the island has always been known for its infamous currents, so be cautious during high tide and swells, as there will be strong currents. The larger the waves are, the stronger the outgoing current will be. Please do not underestimate the power of the Ocean, even if you consider yourself a strong swimmer. Although we do offer lifeguard services, we encourage that you use the “buddy system” when swimming (i.e. take someone with you).

NIHIWATU®’s beach is just over two and a half kilometers long and is a quick 45-minutes power walk or a leisurely hour and a half stroll to the point and back. The shore is great for hiking at low tide, with many fascinating rock formations and tidal pools towards the far end. If you plan to hike the beach and want to take water with you, please ask the staff for a handy water bottle carrier to use.

As a cultural aside, we recommend that ladies cover up with a sarong when walking along the beach, as it is unusual on Sumba to see women exposed outside of their villages.

Just past The Boathouse there are some rustic, shaded pavilions known as “Bale” : they are great places to hang out and read, take photographs of the surfers, or do nothing but take in the views. We would be happy to bring you drinks or serve your lunch there. Just let us know ahead of time and we will be able to prepare everything for you. If you’re looking for idyllic napping spots, you should find the hammocks that are hidden just past the Boathouse in the Pandanus trees.
